SkyWatch Friday ~ Yakoun Estuary

One of the prettiest walks on Haida Gwaii when the tide is in and the sky is blue is the walk along the Sunset Trail in Port Clements.
The Yakoun River is the longest river on Haida Gwaii meandering about 60 km(37 miles) from Yakoun Lake in south central Graham Island to Masset Inlet, a large salt water bay.
The estuary is broad and shallow partly due do silt deposits from clear-cut logging.  It has a world famous fall salmon run and cut throat trout in the spring.
Bank erosion of the river combined with high water in the spring sweeps large trees into the esturary
Where some continue life as a "nurse stump" for new life.
This is this morning's collection of trash off the two kilometer stretch of beach we walk daily.  Fortunately there were no feet in these shoes!  If you are new to my blog check the previous two posts to see what we pick up off the same two km. stretch of  beach daily! There is about 8000 kms of exposed shoreline just on this island.....IMAGINE THE GARBAGE!!!!!!

For other great skies from around the world why not join us at

A wonderful set of pics, but I love the stump that's been recycled by nature to live again.

Not so nice is the garbage and the ongoing feet in sneakers story is most strange. I was following it when we lived in Toronto - I haven't heard anything, so guessing that it's still unresolved.

The first shot is indeed breathtaking! Love the reflections. I also love the big stump. Marvelous captures! Hope you have a great weekend!

That is a really beautiful set of photos. It's a shame about all the garbage, people have no respect for the environment.

there is something arresting about the toppled trees in the estuary.

thanks goodness no feet were found by you!

Beautiful beach. It seems some don't think so. Disgusting the way people throw their trash.

The reflection in the first shot is superb.

Wonderful photos, the scenery and sky are just beautiful. I have to say thank you for caring enough to pick up the trash.

I love all your photos. The first is just so pretty. The reflection looks like a frosted glass.

I understand about garbage in the shores. I see them along our coast here.

The first photo is simply gorgeous. Interesting that the old dead trees can be nurse trees.

I love the tree sculptures in your bay, but the trash is so sad. It must wash up every day.

Your walk is so beautiful and your photos honor it well. Plus your kindness of collecting the trash honors are planet, thank you!

Hi Carolyn
I stopped by to answer your question about those Mandrin Ducks.. Over the last few years they seem to be doing very well breeding and rearing their young in at least 3 places I visit. They certainly are beautful looking birds.
I have to apologize for my lack of visiting... it is very much one sided at the moment... I and another local have started up a blog about the history of our town... it is taking up time for sure... but with it being about local places it is interesting.
I have however made up for my absense today by catching up on your last few postings.
I would love to have been able to grow up and grow old in such a place as this... to beachcomb has been a dream of mine... I'm sure I would have surrounded myself in natural artwork... those trees are awesome... You do a great job cleaning up the beach and it really must be both annoying to have to do it... yet very rewarding.. Keep up the great work... on the beach and here on your blog.

You do live in a pretty part of the world, shame about the litter that some folks leave behind, seems like we can't escape from it no matter where we are.

Beautiful place you live in! I have started taking a garbage bag with me whenever I go for a walk along any shore line...it's amazing the plastic that washes up everywhere! The Pacific gyre is worth looking at via google, and sharing with others...note to earth, you're drowning in plastic!(sorry for the rant...haven't even had my coffee
yet!)

Great shots, but what a mess people leave behind!

So good of you to clean up the messes others leave behind. Your love of nature is also evident in your crisp, clean and beautiful photos. I just discovered your site and plan to follow it regularly. I hope to learn more about the special places in northwest BC along the way. :)

It's hard for me to understand how so much trash could be thrown onto such an otherwise pristine beach. I'm impressed that you clean so much up.

It's the trees I'm fascinated by more than the sky (tho I see you have lovely summer skies at the moment). These trees are amazing sculptures in their own right.

Great shots ... Makes me sad to see all the garbage. People have so little respect for the environment.
