The Grand Dame

I was brought up in Toronto and even though I live on the west coast now one of the places in Toronto which always brings back to my childhood here is the grand old Royal York Hotel. Located across from Union Station on Front Street this hotel was the largest hotel in the British Empire and remains the largest hotel in Canada with 1600 rooms. She was built by Canadian Pacific Railway and was the tallest building in Canada upon her completion in 1929.

This plaque(click on photo to enlarge and read!) was mounted on the hotel on her 50th Anniversary in 1979. On June 11, 2009 she will celebrate her 80th birthday. To learn more about the history of the Royal York click here

That´s one mighty building. It looks just massive. Plaques always give a nice finishing touch.

I love this hotel. We sometimes just sit in the lobby and enjoy people watching. Then we take the P.A.T.H. underground to the Eaton Centre.

Wow, this was a treat to see and read about. I lived in TO for just a few years, back in the 70s, before moving to Alberta. But I remember this old gal and the train station very well - just hand't thought of them in years. Neat!

Looks like a fascinating building with a long history. 200 years ago there was only a log house there! How times have changed.

Impressive might building. I think, it would be interesting to know if there are ghosts in there considering it's very old already :)
