Tow Hill is the remnents of an ancient volcano that erupted at the edge of the sea, was cooled by the sea and then eroded by the sea and glacial action. What is left on the north side is the basalt columns of the core of the volcano. It is 300' above sealevel which isn't that high but when it is the only bump on the landscape it seems high.

SkyWatch Friday #57 ~ Rain
The rains started on Sunday evening, just a little, the type of rain that evaporates as soon as it hits dry ground.

My World Tuesday ~ The dog days of summer!
Friday was muggy hot with really bad air due to forest fire smoke from mainland B.C. and Alaska. All photos can be clicked on to enlarge for more detail
I went for a walk down to the docks to look for a reprieve from the hot still air. The harbour was the place to be with boats arriving and leaving and boys being boys.
Sitting at the end of one of the arms of the dock I watched some teenage boys challenge one another at jumping off the government dock.

Peer pressure was high on the agenda as each boy challenged each other and their own fears. Some jumped....
others tried to find other, less intimidating ways down.
All this happened while the harbour bustled with boat traffic
but they all lived to swim another day!

SkyWatch Friday #56 ~ Hope
I woke one morning last week very early and could not go back to sleep. I went out to my meditation spot on the knoll to watched the sun rise.

MyWorld Tuesday - Smoke
Our world here is being turned upside down. We have had no significant rain in over two months. (These photos were taken at noon today in a cloudless sky!)
The temperatures have reached all time record highs and although we are reassured there are no fires on Haida Gwaii there is lots of smoke as the rest of British Columbia is fighting for its life in the worst fire season ever. For those of you not familiar with the fire story in our part of the world you can go here for more photos and information.
