11.11.11 ~ Lest We Forget

In Flanders Fields
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

I'm with you. I'll be at the ceremony in our small town.

Wonderful poem. We should not forget but people do have short memories I am afraid.

Lovely post! Lovely words! Haven't read that poem in some time, but as soon as I read the first line I could quote the rest of it. Funny, the things that stick someplace in your mind, never to go away.

Have a great day!

Simple and thoughtful post. The red poppies were really used for the full effect.

How well the poppies grow there, we remember WWI and its immense bloodshed and have relegated the Battle of Waterloo to history...it too soaked the land in blood.

Every time I read or hear that poem, I cry! It is so important to remember it all!

Such an apt and wonderful post. How can those of us who have lost so much in wars ever forget . . .

I always find those words so moving - but haven't seen a real Flanders poppy downunder in OZ. The field is so beautiful - a fitting way to remember the bloodshed and loss.
